BCS Preliminary Negative Marking Rules 2025

According to BPSC Rules 2014, in BCS Preliminary each correct answer adds 1 mark and each wrong answer deducts 0.50 marks. The exam is 200 marks with 100 questions in 2 hours. No marks are added or deducted for unattempted questions.

Example: 80 correct and 15 wrong answers gives a score of (80 × 1) − (15 × 0.50) = 80 − 7.5 = 72.50. In this calculator, enter total questions, number attempted, and number wrong — the score appears instantly. Optionally enter a cutoff to see pass or fail.

When to attempt and when to skip? (Negative marking strategy)

In BCS (0.50 negative), it is profitable to attempt a question if you can eliminate more than 2 options. If you are unsure between only 2 options, it is safe to attempt — correct gives +1, wrong −0.50 — the expected value is positive. If all 4 options seem equally likely, skip.

In Bank job and Primary exams (0.25 negative), the strategy is simpler — if you can eliminate any 2 of the 4 options, it is profitable to attempt, because the expected value becomes positive. Remember: do not leave doubtful answers till the last moment — complete the certain ones first, then consider the uncertain ones.

Negative marking formula and examples by exam type

BCS: Score = Correct − (Wrong × 0.50). Bank and Primary: Score = Correct − (Wrong × 0.25). UPSC: Score = Correct − (Wrong × 0.33). For custom exams, enter your own negative mark value in the calculator.

Example 1 (BCS): 75 answered out of 100, 65 correct, 10 wrong → Score = 65 − (10 × 0.5) = 60. Example 2 (Bank): 80 answered, 70 correct, 10 wrong → Score = 70 − (10 × 0.25) = 67.50. This calculator handles both calculations in seconds.
