Billing rules and other charges
- The lifeline rate is only for those using at most 50 units in the month. At 51 units every unit is billed by the steps.
- The demand charge follows sanctioned load (kW) — payable even with no use. Demand above the sanctioned load is charged double.
- Peak: 5 PM–11 PM. Off-peak: 11 PM–5 PM next day. EV charging: 5–9 AM is super off-peak.
- Late payment: a one-time 5% surcharge, never compounded.
- LT above 20 kW and all MT/HT customers must keep power factor 0.95; each 0.01 below adds 0.75% of the energy charge.
- Prepaid meters get a 0.5% rebate on the bill before VAT; recharging is free of charge.
- Company meters carry meter rent under existing rules; no rent if you bought the meter or paid its full cost.

What is the electricity price per unit in 2026?+
Residential by step: lifeline (0–50) 4.63, 0–75 units 5.26, 76–200 8.50, 201–300 9.10, 301–400 9.62, 401–600 15.01 and above 600 17.35 taka (before VAT). Commercial (LT-E) flat 15.36.
Do DESCO, DPDC and Palli Bidyut charge differently?+
No. BERC sets one retail tariff for all six companies (BPDB, Palli Bidyut Samitis, DPDC, DESCO, WZPDCO, NESCO). Only meter rent can differ.
Why does the bill jump above 50 units?+
The lifeline rate (4.63) is only for consumers using at most 50 units. At 51 units every unit is billed from 5.26 upwards.
What is the demand charge?+
A fixed monthly charge per kW of sanctioned load — 42 taka for homes, 90 for commercial — payable even with no use.
How much VAT?+
5% VAT is added to the electricity bill. Prepaid meters get a 0.5% rebate on the bill before VAT.

How the bill is calculated
Bill = energy charge (units × step rate) + demand charge (load × rate) + 5% VAT + meter rent. For homes, each step's units are charged at that step's rate.

Is the tariff different for DESCO, DPDC or Palli Bidyut?
No. BERC's 2026 order sets one retail tariff for all six distribution companies; only meter rent can differ.
