4.00 scale vs 5.00 scale — what's the difference?

The 4.00 scale is used by most public universities in Bangladesh (University of Dhaka, BUET, National University), where the maximum CGPA is 4.00. The 5.00 scale is used by some private universities and madrasah boards, where the maximum CGPA is 5.00.

When writing your CGPA on a job application form, always mention the scale too (e.g. 3.50/4.00 or 4.50/5.00), because the same CGPA value means a different percentage on each scale. On BCS, bank, and private job forms, not mentioning the scale leaves the information ambiguous.

How to write CGPA on Bangladesh job application forms?

BCS application forms require CGPA and scale to be entered separately — for example CGPA: 3.50, Scale: 4.00, Percentage: 87.50%. Government and private bank forms usually ask you to fill in all three columns. This calculator gives all three values at once.

On BPSC's BCS online application, the 'Result' section requires the degree type, CGPA, and scale in separate fields. Incorrect information can cause problems during verification before the exam. So enter exactly what appears on your certificate or transcript, and keep the converted percentage ready alongside.

How to present CGPA as percentage for study abroad?

Universities in the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia generally accept a 3.50 CGPA on Bangladesh's 4.00 scale as 87.50%. Evaluation bodies like WES and ECE use the percentage value to determine an equivalent grade.

Always provide three things together on your application: (1) CGPA, (2) scale, (3) percentage. For example: 'CGPA 3.50 out of 4.00 (87.50%)'. This format is the most widely accepted on UCAS, Common App, and direct university applications.
